This summer spend a week singing pop, a cappella and indie, while learning what it really takes to make it as a singer.
Community Chorus Project is pleased to offer a weeklong workshop to singers in grades 9-12. The program is run in collaboration with the Department of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is supported by an Innovations Fund grant from UNC’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities.
The Summer Recording Workshop brings together the best high school singers in the area for a week-long, immersive musical experience. You’ll acquire real world techniques and tips from professional musicians and have opportunities to collaborate, record, make videos and perform songs. New this summer, singers are invited to contribute their own arrangements of contemporary or classic pop songs. The workshop will culminate in a showcase performance on August 2 at 8pm, at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, one of the area’s premiere live music venues.
If you love to sing and have a passion for large group, small group or solo singing then this is the workshop for you!
Students in the Summer Recording Workshop have recorded and performed songs by The Kinks, David Byrne with St.Vincent, Justin Timberlake, REM, Adele, Arcade Fire, Band of Horses and the Motown classic, I Want You Back. Their work has been featured on R.E.M’s website and Facebook page, as well as The Kink’s Facebook page. Over 83,000 people have seen the videos on Youtube Tube – watch here!
Public school chorus teacher, composer and musician Seamus Kenney is the lead teacher for workshop, and will be assisted by voice teacher, Marianne Cheng (see biographies).
HOW DO I AUDITION FOR THE SUMMER RECORDING WORKSHOP?
After registering, singers will be contacted and invited to audition for Seamus Kenney on April 12 at UNC. Students will be asked to sing a verse and a chorus from any contemporary song of their choice, either unaccompanied or self-accompanied on guitar, piano or another instrument. Singers will be notified within 48 hours of the outcome of their audition.
We are looking for talented singers (rising 9th graders to graduating seniors) with strong musicality and individuality. Previous chorus experience is helpful, but not required. Admission is by audition only.
The Summer Recording Workshop will be held from July 28 – August 1 in the Kenan Music Building on the campus of UNC at Chapel Hill. The program will run from 10:00am – 5pm, with an hour for lunch. There will be a culminating performance at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro on August 2 at 8pm. Tuition fees are $375, payable in full upon acceptance of a place in the program. Limited scholarships are available based on financial need.
